Nursing Department’s
Favorite Tradition:
The Pinning and Lamp Lighting Ceremony
The most poignant moment that blends career, college, and family takes place in May,
alongside PCC’s Commencement.
Nursing students receive the nursing pin inscribed with the College seal and the words “Beauty,”
“Strength,” and “Truth”—three ideals these graduates have exemplified. The pins
symbolize the nursing students’ transition and welcome into the nursing profession.
The lighting of the lamps commemorates the tradition of Florence Nightingale, whose lamp brought hope to
injured during the Crimean War. As graduates light their lamps, they are committing themselves to these same
ideals of hope, healing, and comfort.
